Season Comes To An End At WSCD

September 12th, 2008 brought the final dirt track race to WSCD for the 2008 Season.

The sixth season of stock car racing at Winnemucca Regional Raceway is now history as the roar of engines from the Jungo Road one-third mile oval will not be heard until early April of 2009.  The final event saw all five divisions competing for added prize money plus two special ‘powder puff’ races.  The

Dwarf Cars, new to the raceway this season, were racing for $1000 for the winner of the feature race on Friday night.  That added money drew 16 of the diminutive racecars that are based on cars from the thirties and forties and powered by 1200 cc motorcycle engines.  First time visitor at WRR Derek Rosse won the feature race in a thriller over 2005 IMCA track champion Gene Kay and Reese Wilson.  Local Modified ace Rodney Sweet finished in fourth.  Dominic Gabiola and Wilson won the two-heat races.  The feature race was set to a 25-minute time limit but it seemed as if the modified cars and drivers were on the track instead of the Dwarfs, as only nine racing laps were run before the time limit expired.  Chris Forgnone, who finished eighth in the feature, won the track championship.
In the IMCA Modifieds, Ward Amberson won the track title, as the Spring Creek veteran driver raced to a fourth place finish in the feature.  Defending champion Cory Sample elected to forgo racing for a chance to repeat again this year to run with the Wild West Modified Tour in Idaho the same night.  For Sample, it was a good decision as only nine Modifieds took the green flag in the event here, not enough cars to insure full field status regarding points.  In Idaho, Sample finished fifth.  In the race here, Chico, CA star Dustin Jenks was the man of the hour, as he won here for the second time this season.  Jenks took the lead from 2007 state of Nevada champion Chad Farstveet during the ninth circuit and led him to the checkered flag.  Farstveet was second and Amberson finished in the third spot.  With that finish Amberson clinched the state of Nevada title for 2008 along with the track championship.  The forty-year-old Amberson is on schedule to also win the title at Battle Mountain Raceway next weekend at the Silver Cup at that track.
Another track championship on the line Friday night was the one in the WSCD Mini Mod class.  Going in, Winnemucca’s Tim Garner and veteran driver of over 30 years Dominick DeGrazia had been battling all season long with Garner leading by only seven points.  Nine Mini Mod cars were in the feature but it was all Garner in the decider.  Garner took his fifth feature of the season as he beat Silver Spring standout Chris Oberman and local star Mike Wogan.  DeGrazia was not a factor as Dominick was sixth at the finish, as Garner won his second track title.  Garner warmed up by winning the earlier heat race.  Two-time champion Ken Knight was also not a factor as his engine had woes early.
Brian Thorp from Spring Creek was the all-time win leader at the raceway since the track started in 2003 and he added another victory next to his name in the WSCD Pro Stock division.  Shawn LaRocque’s engine luck turned sour over the past two months during the racing season, and Friday night was no exception.  His engine stayed together but his water pump might have been manufactured in China, as the part went south.  LaRocque was the point leader going into the race and he maintained it through the feature, winning his first championship.  After Thorp in the feature, it was Lee Bosch in second and Dave Carrera third.  Thorp also captured the heat race over LaRocque.
Shaylin Sample was in line for the WSCD Pure Stock title in only her first racing season and did not disappoint her fans.  Former champion Walt Frazier took both the heat race and the feature.  Frazier raced to victory over Butch Seals and Sample.  Frazier elected to run with the Pro Stocks on opening night was back in April and should have set the cars for the Pure Stocks, he may have won another title in this division.  Hindsight is always 20/20!  With second place driver Dale Schofield not at the track, Sample needed only to start the heat race to clinch the championship.
Sample did win one of the Powder Puff Derby races as two races for the girls took place.  Sample drove one of the Dwarf Cars and took first place over Kristine Keller.  Missy Natenstedt won the other event race, beating Melinda Roysdon.
