VEHICLE SAFETY: all classes
A. ROLL CAGES
1. All roll cages must be constructed from 1.5-inch or greater outside diameter, 0.095-inch wall thickness ERW or DOM mild steel tubing (no water pipe, no exhaust tubing are allowed). Tubing with a 0.095-inch wall thickness and an outside diameter of 1.75 inches is strongly recommended for street- stock and pro-stock classes.
2. Track management reserves the right to drill a 1/8-inch diameter hole at a point of management’s choosing in the car’s main cage at any time in order to verify tubing specifications.
3. The roll cage must be mounted, by welding, at no less than 6 points to vehicle frame or on 3/16 inch or thicker mild steel plates with an area of 36 square inches or greater (i.e. 6” by 6”, 4” by 9”, etc.) welded to sub-frame for uni-body vehicles as dictated by specific vehicle configuration. All such roll cage attachment points must have at least one welded gusset. Additional foot protection is strongly recommended for driver’s safety.
4. Only stick, mig or tig welds are allowed; no soldered or brazed joints, or threaded fittings are allowable for cage construction.
5. Roll cage hoops must be continuous, no splices.
6. All cages must have at least one halo bar within the top hoop.
7. Offset cages are not allowed.
8. Driver’s door bars must include a minimum of 3 horizontal and 2 vertical bars of cage-specification material, and their joints must be gusseted. Upper horizontal door bar must be within 8 inches of bottom of original window opening. In classes allowing a passenger, all drivers-side specifications must be met on passenger side also.
9. Non-passenger class cars may use 2 horizontal and one vertical door bar, or x-bars.
10. Mild steel plate of 18 gauge or thicker must be securely attached to, and cover the exterior of the driver’s side door bars.
B. DRIVERS’ UNIFORMS
1. SFI-approved fire-resistant driving suit, gloves, and neck braces are mandatory for all competitors.
2. SFI-approved shoes are required and SFI-approved socks are strongly recommended
3. Neck braces and or Hans type device is required
1. All vehicles, except Gen-X class cars, must use aluminum racing-type seat(s); side bolsters are recommended.
2. Seats must be securely attached to roll cage; with minimum of 4-grade 8 bolts of 3/8" diameter.
3. Seat covers and padding must be made of fire retardant material.
4. Seats must have head support.
1. Snell 2005 helmet or newer is required; only full-face type helmets with face shield will be allowed.
2. Chinstrap and fastener must be in good condition and functional.
3. Helmet must not be cracked anywhere.
4. Helmet and all other safety equipment must be worn at all times vehicle is on the track and must be present in car when it undergoes technical inspection.
1. Five-point, three-inch minimum width (minimum 2-inch anti-submarine belt), SFI-approved seat belts are mandatory.
2. All belts must be roll-bar mount or be secured with OEM hardware. Grade-8 bolts of 3/8-inch or larger diameter, with either self-locking nuts or nuts with lock-washers are mandatory for mounting.
3. No worn, frayed, or sun-rotted belts will be allowed. Tattered fibers, non-functional clasps, or insufficient mounting points will cause vehicle to fail technical inspection.
F. WINDOW NETS
1. Window net must be mounted so latch is at top left corner, as seen from outside vehicle facing window, and must be easily accessible from outside.
2. Webbed window netting only; minimum size of 16 inches by 20 inches (no string-type nets allowed).
3. Classes allowing a passenger must have approved type netting mounted on passenger side as well as driver’s side.
G. FIRE SAFETY
1. Competing vehicles may have at a minimum a fully charged 2½-pound dry chemical, Class ABC fire extinguisher that is securely mounted and within easy reach of the driver while he/she is strapped into seat. Extinguisher must not be wired or zip-tied to mounting point, and must be readily removable from mount. Recommend that car number be painted on the extinguisher.
2. All race teams must have a minimum of 20lb, fully charged fire extinguisher in the pits that is attached to the car trailer or the rear of the tow vehicle. Recommend that car number be painted on the extinguisher.
3. Fire extinguishers must be readily visible and easily removed for use.
4. A functional, clearly labeled kill-switch must be securely mounted within reach of the driver when he/she is strapped into the seat.
5. The kill-switch must also be readily visible, legible, and accessible to track officials standing outside the car.
6. Any vehicle using an electrical fuel pump must have a functional inertia switch that will interrupt power to the pump in the event of a rollover.
7. All exhaust systems must exit outside the driver’s compartment and vehicle’s bodywork.
8. All flammable materials must be removed from the vehicle including, but not limited to, sound-deadening materials, insulation, plastic interior trim, etc.
9. Only one battery is allowed, and it must be held down with 2-inch by ¼-inch mild steel strap or 1”x1” x1/8” angle.
H. FUEL SYSTEMS
1. All vehicles in all classes except Gen-X (see those rules) must have a racing fuel cell.
2. Fuel cells must be mounted by at least 2-each, 2-inch by ¼-inch thick mild steel straps completely surrounding the cell. An 18-gauge steel cover over the fuel cell is strongly recommended.
3. The fuel cell must be fuel-tight, be capable of being securely closed, and have a functional rollover valve to stop fuel leakage in the event of a rollover.
4. The fuel pickup from the cell must not be the lowest point on the vehicle. Bottom-mounted pickup lines are not allowed, and no portion of the fuel line must touch the ground. A minimum fuel cell-to-ground clearance of 10-inches is mandatory.
5. Minimal use of non-reinforced rubber fuel line hose is strongly recommended.
6. Only metal fuel filters are allowable; no plastic or glass fuel filters may be used.
7. Only pump gasoline sanctioned class-specific fuels (one example would be methanol for IMCA modified), or commercially available racing gasoline are allowed.
8. No additives such as nitro-methane, propylene oxide or other oxygenating compounds, or any means of pressurized induction are permitted.
I. DRIVER’S COMPARTMENT
1. The driver’s compartment must be sealed from the engine and fuel cell by the stock firewall or for Modified-Mini or Pro-Stock classes ONLY a new one may be constructed of 18-gauge or heavier steel. In any case, every effort must be made to minimize the number and sizes of any required openings in firewalls.
2. Any fuel line or other liquid line passing through the interior of the driver’s compartment shall be contained in double-walled steel and securely fastened so as to protect the driver from any possible leakage or fire.
3. We strongly discourage mounting of the battery in the driver’s compartment. If it is mounted there, it must be within a container that will prevent spilled acid in the event of a possible rollover or hard impact from reaching the driver.
4. A “windshield bar” and steel mesh screen capable of supporting a minimum weight of 150 pounds must replace the windshield. Using cage-specification material and making the support bar an integral part of the cage is strongly recommended.
5. No loose objects are allowed in the driver’s compartment.
6. No side or rearview mirrors of any kind are allowed in any class.
7. All bars within drivers reach must be padded with no- flammable padding, No pipe insulation, it’s very flammable.
J. DRIVE SHAFT
1. A driveshaft hoop must completely encircle the driveshaft behind the front universal joint and within the front 6”in. of the driveshaft.
2. The driveshaft hoop must be constructed of 2-inch by ¼ inch minimum, mild steel or 1’ round steel tubing 0.065” wall thickness, must be securely mounted to the vehicle so as to be capable of retaining the driveshaft in the event of failure of the universal joint or other problem.
3. The driveshaft must be painted white, also with car number on it, kept clean for easier visibility in the event of loss on the track.
K. OTHER MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS
1. Transmission blankets or scatter shields are mandatory.
2. All transmissions must have a 1-inch hole in the bell housing to enable visual inspection of the clutch, flywheel, or torque converter. If the components are not visible, the vehicle may be declared ineligible to compete.
3. Radiator must be mounted in front of the engine; no rear-mounted radiators will be allowed.
4. One continuous hoop no larger in diameter than the roll cage may be used to support the radiator.
5. Vehicles must not leak fluids. Catch cans or other reservoirs are strongly recommended overflow tube must point too ground.
6. Wheel studs must protrude from lug nuts with threads showing.
7. Two front and two rear tow loops are required; these must be securely attached to frame of all vehicles.
8. Homemade or modified spindles are prohibited.
9. Any added weight must be securely attached by minimum of ½” bolts, and be painted
White, also with car number on added weight.
L. BODYWORK AND BUMPERS
1. All doors must be securely attached to vehicle
2. All hoods and deck lids must be securely fastened; hood pins are preferred.
3. Bumpers must terminate smoothly into the body at their ends, or must have substantial, smooth-surfaced straps secured from the bumper ends to the bodywork.
4. No sharp exterior edges are allowed anywhere on the vehicle.
5. Side nerf-bars for classes where allowed may extend up to a maximum of 2-inches from the bodywork. Ends must be tapered so as to be longest on the body side, shortest on the outside.
M. TIRE RULES
1. Tires and tire types that are allowed, or required to be used vary by car class and are specified in the individual class rules. In NO class is the use of tire-softening chemicals of any kind or description permitted.
