Winnemucca, NV.... The five racing divisions at Winnemucca Regional Raceway Friday night produced six feature winners on the action packed one-third mile clay oval. The racing surface was nearly top notched compared to the manure-infested track of two weeks ago. All of the muck had been removed earlier, and the track was ready to race, and raced they did. In the process, the newest division, the Dwarf Cars, provided the first dead heat in the five plus year history of the raceway. Former Pro Stock standout Dave Jenkins seemingly had the feature wrapped up earlier as he took the lead from Dominic Gabiola on lap four as the leader spun out and gave the lead to Jenkins, but Gabiola fought back as the two put on a whale of a show right to the checkered flag. Gabiola had the lead once again until the final turn in the final lap. Jenkins took the inside with Gabiola, naturally, on the outside. The pair turned the oval into a mini drag strip as they turned into John Force and Cruz Pedregon down to the flag stand. Neither of them flinched. The scorers and flagman could not pick a winner, and for the first time, both Jenkins and Gabiola were declared winners. The duo split the first and second place money and they both received first place points, 36 points each. Who finished second? No one, as Chris Forgnone was third, Ron Jenkins raced to fourth place. What a race! In only their second appearance of the season here, the Dwarf Cars are here to stay. Dave Jenkins, one of three Jenkins Family racers, also won the earlier heat race. The fans were buzzing for quite a while after that one.

Cory Sample is the defending IMCA Modified track champion, but only one thing was missing on his racing resume: he was still looking for that elusive feature victory at his home track. Last season, the three-year driver did win his career first, but it wasn’t here, it was at Battle Mountain. The 19-year old possesses most of the same moves that more experienced drivers apply on the track. The kid is a natural, and might hit the big time should the opportunity came along. By this time you probably know that the young man raced to his first career win at home during the IMCA Modified feature. After shadowing 2007 state of Nevada champion Chad Farstveet passed Sample for the lead during the 14th go-around, Sample patiently waited for an opportunity. That happened on lap 24 of the 30-lap event, as Farstveet’s developed overheating problems that made him bounced into the turn two tire fence, ending his efforts six laps shy of the victory. Sample assumed the lead over point leader Ward Amberson driving the MOPAR machine of Randy Artz, who had knee surgery and could not race. Amberson was right behind Sample during the final laps, but the kid drove a smart race. Amberson finished second, while Mitch Green finished a strong third with Tim Mazour in fourth. Another local favorite Jimmy Delaney continued his sour luck as he lost his engine during the 19th lap. Sample and Green won the two heat races.

Two weeks ago in the Saturday afternoon after the BS was removed, former Mini Mod champion Tim Garner was a shining star, taking the checkered for his eighth time at the track. The question was could he be able to win under the lights. Garner removed any questions that anybody had with another victory Friday night, after mixing it up with Gary Ogburn, Jr. After the first several laps, the feature was literally a three-man race between Garner, Ogburn and veteran driver Dominick DeGrazia. Eventually, DeGrazia’s stock engine was unable to keep up with the hard charging Garner and Ogburn, but the Fourth of July fireworks took over. Ogburn tagged Garner in between turn three and four, sending Garner around. All hell could have erupted at that point but nothing happened. About a month ago, the same situation happened with Garner hit Ogburn on the left rear, sending the leader around. At that time, the same thing happened: nothing. Those who wanted a donnybrook were disappointed. At one time in this feature, DeGrazia was a lap down, and at one time might have won the thing had Garner was unable to re-fire his car after a yellow.

Another disappointing was the very small field of the Pro Stocks: three. With Lee Bosch away out of state, Chad Farstveet was able to fit into his car. He ran against point leader Shawn LaRocque and Travis Roysdon. LaRocque was in the lead over Farstveet until his tire decided to call it a night, with LaRocque pitting, giving the lead to Farstveet. After that, LaRocque was unable to catch up to Farstveet and Chad won his first Pro Stock feature win. LaRocque did win the heat race.

Dale Schofield won the Saturday feature in the Pure Stocks two weeks ago, and he must have liked it since he did it again Friday night. Former champion Walt Frazier tried to catch up with the winner but Schofield was strong when it counted. Schofield also won the heat race. Shaylin Sample is still leading the point parade with her fourth place finish.
